Fairweather Friend

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I am 21 years old, and have over the past several months been chatting with this girl online for the past 6 months now. I was going through a break up, and went online looking to just vent to somebody, and found her. We got very close online, but have never met, even though she wanted to (I live around New York, she lives in Dallas), but I was never keen on the idea (due to my problems with my past relationship which were still lingering). At this point, she just found out she has Lymphoma which might be very serious, and she might only have six months to live. I really do not know what to do. I feel something for this girl, she is a great friend of mine, and I honestly do not know what I should do right now. Should I try and be a friend to her, possibly meet her? Should I try and save myself and maybe start to slowly cut her off? I just feel like nobody would understand and that I cannot discuss this to anybody, what would you do in this situation?
Thank you again for reading my question. -- Jim

What Mary Says...  What Crystal Says...

Dear Jim:

Stop being a wuss.

Look man. You can’t shield yourself all the time from potential heartache and expect to find happiness. In case you haven’t noticed, the world favors survival and challenge and the gods tend to make it so you’re only touched by true bliss when you also endure deep sorrow. This girl, she could change your life. Maybe she’ll be the person who impacts you in a way that resonates through your soul and gives meaning to who you are. Or maybe, it’ll just be something passing that you remember faintly one day in your deepest dreams. Either way, you’ll never know unless you try. And if you’re lucky, if you’re truly blessed, you’ll get to be the much needed bliss in HER life, a life soon filled with mounding, deep sorrow.
